Social Saturday 2017

Supported by key local partners, including OxLEP and Oxford City Council, OSEP is coordinating, supporting and promoting a range of events and activities to highlight the fantastic work being undertaken by Social Enterprises across Oxfordshire. Social Saturday is an initiative from Social Enterprise UK to promote Social Enterprise nationally. Social Saturday is on Saturday 14th October, although are are promoting and supporting lots of activities leading up to it during w/c 9th October, including VIP visits to local Social Enterprises. See the schedule for the week below, which is still building:

SATURDAY 7th

  • Oxford United is promoting Social Saturday with a full page feature in their match day programme at their home match with AFC Wimbledon to support the important work Social Enterprises undertake in the local community. Oxford United also support a range of Social Enterprises locally throughout the year. More details here
  • The Big Sleep Out: Aspire Oxford and Oxford Homeless Pathways are partnering to raise awareness of Homelessness and raise funds to support these two organisations supporting those who face this problem. More details here

  • Oxford City Farm Festival: A celebration of Autumn and our lovely Community. Pony rides, animals to cuddle, yummy local bbq and veggie food, facepainting, tea and cakes, apple pressing, pumpkins to buy, toddler disco, feed the pig game, bar and lots more! More details here

  • East Oxford Farmers' & Community Market (community co-op): The East Oxford Farmers' & Community Market is a small, friendly local market which can provide the staples for your weekly shop: bread, eggs, milk, vegetables, cheese, various meats, refills for cleaning supplies - as well as a range of other products such as jewellery, clothing and secondhand books.​ More details here

  • Waste2Taste: Food at The Oxford Beard festival - Waste2Taste is an external catering business with a social mission - to provide affordable and ethical food from sustainable sources. At the Oxford Bear Festival it is providing food to raise money for the Oxford Food Bank. More details here

MONDAY 9th

  • Hot Desking at The Mix: The Mix is available four days a week as a ‘hot desk’ space. People can subscribe to have access to The Mix as a space to work from in town on Mon/Tues & Thurs/Fridays. They have high desks, decent wifi and low table space. There’s basic kitchen and toilet facilities and several cafes very close by.  Access to The Mix is available between the hours of 9am and 5pm on hot desking days. More details here

  • Yellow Submarine Café's: But One Coffee, get one free! - Yellow Submarine run two fantastic cafes – one in Oxford and one in WItney. Their cafés don’t just sell delicious freshly made food and drinks, they create incredible, life-changing opportunities for young people with disabilities. For Social Saturday, they have a Buy One, Get One Free offer on their coffee during w/c 9th October. Find out more here

  • Refresh Cafe: Free hot drink when you purchase a panini or baguette - To mark and promote Social Saturday, The Refresh cafe is running this offer w/c 9th October. Café is run by volunteers, who have completed or had experience of treatment and who can relate to service users and offers an opportunity to gain valuable work experience enabling people to learn and move forward with their lives.   • RAW - Exclusive Offer! RAW, a thriving social enterprise in East Oxford, is offering a 10% discount on all purchases of their products and all sales from their Reclaimed Wood Shop. The offer is open all week and upto 30th October. More details here

TUESDAY 10th

  • Broken Spoke Bike Co-op: Leader of the City Council, Cllr Bob Price is visiting Broken Spoke’s Open Workshop session (10am - 5pm)

  • Broken Spoke Bike Co-op: Repair Tuesday - WE FIX IT FOR YOU – OUR SAME-DAY BIKE REPAIR SERVICE. This is for all you folks out there who prefer to spend time riding rather than repairing your bike. We really care about keeping everyone cycling AND we love working on bikes – so we thought we’d combine the two. More details here

  • Oxford Cooperatives Meetup Group: Autumn Social - Worker cooperatives of Oxford and beyond get together to share thoughts on setting up, running, growing and managing worker co-operatives as a viable business model to provide employee owned and control businesses. More details here

  • 13th Theatre Company Tea and Tango Dance Afternoon: Pop in for tea, chat and maybe a little Latin or Ballroom. No experience need as we can teach you. Cost £3.00 More details here

  • Windrush Bike Project: Open Workshop - The workshop is open for anyone to come and use our tools, buy spare parts, and get help and advice from one of our mechanics. We hope that you will leave with a fixed bike, and knowledge of how to keep it on the road. More details here

WEDNESDAY 11th

  • Ami Coffee Companion Hour: As part of Social Saturday Ami is hosting a series of 3 Coffee Companion Hours in October.  These informal, social occasions are open to all and provide a welcoming environment in which to meet new people and share stories and ideas. Find out more here

  • Oxford Homeless Pathways: TOAST! TOAST is the standard breakfast at our shelters and OxHoP wants your help to raise awareness of Oxfordshire growing homeless population by eating…TOAST. The stall will be giving out tea & toast so please, visit to find out how you can get involved with OxHoP and help them give hope to Oxfordshire homeless. More details here

  • Arts at the Old Fire Station, Hidden Spire - Sawdust: Hidden Spire brings professional artists and homeless people together to create a performance using music, dance, theatre, visual arts and more. The two groups work together every step of the way and aim to produce an event which will stir, enchant, amuse and intrigue. More details here

  • Cultivate Veg Van: Florence Park - Cultivate is your local food co-op dedicated to bringing you local, ethical and delicious fresh produce from their VegVan stop at The Jolly Postboys just outside Florence Park. More details here

  • RAW Workshop: Visit from Charlie Wigglesworth, Director of Business and Enterprise at Social Enterprise UK - As part of the Social Saturday activities, we welcome Charlie Wigglesworth to Oxfordshire, one of SE UK's Social Enteprise "Places". Charlie will be visiting RAW workshop, "Doing Good with Wood" and changing lives at the same time. More details here

  • Broken Spoke Bike Co-op: Open Workshop - A Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Drop-in space We are here to help you learn how to fix your own bike!   • Oxford Circular Collective Upcycling workshop: making car bin bags -  A one-off free and open workshop for Social Saturday week for anyone who'd like to work together towards a solution to the car litter problem in a fun, creative and sociable way. More details here

  • Oxford Brookes University: Meet the Buyer event - Oxford Brookes Univeristy is keen to "Buy Social, so have arranged this special event for Social Saturday to open its doors and help Social Enterprises become suppliers and preferred suppliers. The Brookes Procurmeent team will be giving a short presentation and holding a Q&A session for local Social Enterprises. More details here

  • The Wheelhouse "“IT’S FREE-DAY, FRIDAY” for Social Saturday - The Wheelhouse is offering social entrepreneurs a FREE-DAY FRIDAY, PLUS half price membership for the next month. The Wheelhouse runs community co-working hubs, with offers available to social enterprises and community-focused organisations. In addition to excellent coffee and tea, strong wifi, local restaurant deals and great perks, we run regular events to promote social enterprise and build community among our members.   • Synolos: The official opening of Synolos' new facility has been arranged to coinside with Social Saturday! Synolos welcomes local MP Robert Courts on his visit to see the inspirational support Synolos provides to local young people. More details here

  • Aspire Oxford: Visit from MP, Anneliese Dodds - Annelies Dodds, MP, will be visiting award-winning Aspire Oxford to see at first hand the work the organisation undertakes providing services to local councils, blue-chip corporates, academic institutions and private customers. Aspire’s businesses come with social impact ‘built-in’: they create work placements and employment opportunities for local people who face barriers to securing meaningful employment. We are working with press and media and have already secured interest and support. As well as helping with new events you might like to plan, we simply want to know about any events or activities you have arranged for around that time. We will include them in our programme, which we will be circulating widely, list here, and also have them listed on the Social Enterprise UK website. We would also like to support organisations to coordinate joint events you might want to participate in or develop.
